Building Credit in Canada as a Newcomer
Why your home country credit history means nothing in Canada — and exactly how to build a Canadian credit score from scratch.

One of the most frustrating realities for newcomers to Canada is that your credit history from your home country does not transfer. In Canada, lenders check your credit score with agencies like Equifax and TransUnion, and without a Canadian history, your score starts from zero. This affects your ability to rent an apartment, get a car loan, or qualify for a mortgage.

The fastest way to build credit is to get a secured credit card from a major bank. You deposit $500 or more as collateral, and the bank issues a card with a matching limit. Use it for small purchases each month and pay the balance in full — this builds a positive payment history. After 6–12 months of on-time payments, apply for a regular (unsecured) card with a low limit. Over time, your score will grow. Avoid applying for multiple cards at once, as each application makes a hard inquiry that temporarily lowers your score.
