Moving to Ontario? Here is everything you need to know about housing, healthcare, schools, and building your community network from day one.

Welcome to Ontario — Here Is What to Do First

Moving to a new country is one of the most significant transitions a person can make. For Tamil newcomers arriving in Ontario, the first few weeks can feel overwhelming — but with the right information and community support, settlement becomes much smoother.

Step 1: Apply for Your SIN Card

Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is the first thing you need. Without it, you cannot work legally in Canada. Apply at any Service Canada location or online at canada.ca. Bring your passport, work permit or PR card, and a proof of address.

Step 2: Open a Canadian Bank Account

Most major banks — TD, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO and CIBC — offer newcomer banking packages with no monthly fees for the first year. Bring your SIN card, passport and proof of address. Having a Canadian bank account is essential for your first rental application and to receive your salary.

Step 3: Register for OHIP

Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers most medical services. There is a 3-month waiting period after you arrive — during this time, consider purchasing private travel insurance. After registration, your green card will arrive in the mail within 2–4 weeks.

Step 4: Find Housing

Rental prices in the GTA have risen significantly. Here are some tips:

  • Look in Scarborough, Brampton, and Mississauga for more affordable Tamil community hubs
  • Use the Tamil Canadians directory to find Tamil-speaking real estate agents
  • Bring first and last month's rent, and references from your previous landlord
  • Understand your rights under the Ontario Residential Tenancies Act

Step 5: Connect With Your Community

Ontario is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas outside of South Asia. Tamil cultural centres, temples, and community organisations are found throughout the GTA. Use the Tamil Canadians directory to find businesses, professionals, and community organisations near you.
