How to Register for OHIP and Access Healthcare in Ontario
Navigating the Ontario health insurance system as a newcomer can be confusing. This step-by-step guide walks you through OHIP registration, the 3-month wait and finding a family doctor.
What is OHIP?
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is Ontario's publicly funded health insurance programme. It covers medically necessary services including doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, and diagnostic tests — all at no direct cost to the patient.
The 3-Month Waiting Period
Most newcomers must wait three months before OHIP coverage begins. During this time, it is strongly advised to purchase private health insurance.
How to Register
- Visit a ServiceOntario location in person
- Bring proof of identity (passport or Canadian birth certificate)
- Bring proof of residency (Ontario driver's licence, utility bill, or bank statement with Ontario address)
- Bring proof of Canadian immigration status (PR card, work permit, etc.)
- Your green health card will be mailed to you within 2–4 weeks
