Pongal 2026: How Tamil Canadians Celebrated Harvest Season
A warm recap of Pongal celebrations across the GTA — the pots that overflowed, the kolam that dazzled, and the community spirit that never fades.

January 14th brought colour and warmth to Tamil communities across the GTA despite -12°C temperatures outside. From the outdoor Pongal celebration at Centennial Park organised by the Tamil Heritage Foundation to intimate family gatherings in Brampton basements, the spirit of Pongal — gratitude for abundance, unity with the natural world — was very much alive.

Community highlights included a Pongal pot boiling competition at the Scarborough Tamil Community Centre in which 28 families competed, the winner receiving a traditional bronze vessel. A traditional kolam contest with 40 participants produced designs that stretched 20 feet across the community hall floor. The evening ended with the singing of Pongal folk songs that many attendees said transported them back to childhood mornings in Jaffna and Chennai.
