Tamil Canadian Sports: Cricket, Football and Kabaddi Leagues Across Ontario
A Sporting Community
Tamil Canadians have a deep and passionate relationship with sport. Cricket, football (soccer), kabaddi, and volleyball are particularly popular within the community, and organised Tamil Canadian leagues and tournaments run throughout the GTA, Hamilton, Ottawa and beyond.
Cricket
Cricket is perhaps the most culturally significant sport in the Tamil Canadian community. The Tamil Canadian Cricket Association (TCCA) runs multiple leagues across the GTA, including Twenty20 and One Day formats. Matches are held at Centennial Park, Heart Lake Conservation Area, and several municipal grounds across Brampton and Mississauga.
How to join: visit the TCCA website or enquire through the Tamil Canadians community forum.
Football (Soccer)
The Tamil Canadian Football League (TCFL) operates a men's and women's league across multiple age groups. The season runs from April through September, with playoffs in October. Clubs are based across Scarborough, Brampton, Mississauga, and Markham.
Kabaddi
Kabaddi tournaments draw large and enthusiastic crowds within the Tamil Canadian community. The annual GTA Tamil Kabaddi Championship typically takes place in July and features teams from across Ontario competing for the championship trophy.
