Understanding Express Entry: A Guide for Tamil Professionals
What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's flagship immigration management system for skilled workers. Introduced in 2015, it manages three federal economic immigration programmes: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
How the CRS Score Works
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards points based on:
- Age — maximum points between 20–29 years old
- Education — Canadian or foreign credentials assessed by WES or other designated body
- Language — English and/or French proficiency via IELTS, CELPIP or TEF
- Work experience — both Canadian and foreign
- Arranged employment — LMIA-backed job offer adds 50–200 points
- Provincial Nomination — adds 600 points, virtually guaranteeing an ITA
Tips to Maximise Your CRS Score
- Retake IELTS or CELPIP to aim for CLB 9+ in all four skills
- Apply to a Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP) — Ontario's OINP is highly competitive
- Consider a sibling in Canada — adds 15 points
- Get your foreign credentials assessed — a Canadian Master's or PhD is worth more points
Recent Draw History
In 2025, IRCC conducted category-based draws targeting healthcare workers, STEM professionals, and French speakers alongside all-program draws. CRS cut-offs have ranged from 470 to 525 for all-program draws. Consult the IRCC website for the latest draw results.
Should You Hire an Immigration Lawyer?
While Express Entry is designed to be self-serve, complex cases — such as those involving past refusals, medical inadmissibility, or criminal history — benefit significantly from professional guidance. Our directory lists several experienced Tamil-speaking immigration lawyers and consultants.
