Carnatic Music in the GTA: A Thriving Tradition
From living room practice sessions to concert halls, Carnatic music has found a passionate home in the Tamil Canadian diaspora.

Carnatic classical music — one of the two main traditions of Indian classical music, rooted in South India and deeply associated with Tamil religious and cultural life — has a thriving presence in the GTA. Over 15 registered teaching institutions offer Carnatic vocal and instrumental instruction in voice, veenai, violin, mridangam, and flute to students of all ages.

The annual Margazhi season (December–January), traditionally the peak of Carnatic concert season in Chennai, has its counterpart in Toronto with a GTA Margazhi Music Festival featuring Tamil-Canadian performers at venues across the city. Second-generation Tamil Canadian musicians are increasingly performing at Sabhas in Chennai alongside their training in Canada, reconnecting the diaspora musically with the homeland.
