Tamil Cinema's Global Rise: From Rajinikanth to International Screens
Tamil cinema, centred in Chennai and known as Kollywood, produces over 200 films annually and is the second-largest film industry in India by number of productions. In recent years, Tamil films have broken through to international audiences in ways that would have seemed impossible two decades ago: Ponniyin Selvan broke box office records in North America, the UK, and Australia; PS1 earned a limited release in mainstream Canadian cinemas; and films like Jai Bhim found global audiences through streaming platforms.
For Tamil Canadians, cinema serves as more than entertainment — it is a thread of connection to the culture, language, and geography of the homeland. Tamil movie nights organised by community groups, Tamil film festival screenings in Toronto and Vancouver, and the collective experience of watching a major release opening weekend in a theatre full of Tamil families are all important rituals of diaspora cultural life.
